Manual processes within the folding-gluing stage of production can present challenges for companies striving to maximize productivity. Many steps require operator intervention, which can disrupt workflow and limit throughput. Signature folder-gluers, distributed in North America by American International Machinery, Inc. (AIM), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, has introduced several new developments to automate key stages of the folder-gluer workflow that traditionally have been manual. These systems expand automation beyond the core folding and gluing process to support material handling and packing – improving consistency, reducing manual labor and supporting a more continuous, efficient production flow.
The new Signature load turner automates stack turning before the gluer to alleviate the physical strain of manual handling and ensures consistent, reliable stack loading into the pre-feeder. The load turner operates in-sync with the folder-gluer’s speed to maximize production efficiency – accommodating stack heights from 10 to 14 inches and paperboard up to 800 g/m2 as well as corrugated E-flute. The load turner comes with a specialized pre-feeder designed to integrate with most major folder-gluer platforms. When the load turner is not required for production, it can be detached – allowing the pre-feeder to operate independently for added flexibility.
AIM also offers an automated case erector and robotic slip-sheet inserter as options on new Sig-Pack high-speed automatic carton packer systems. The case erector streamlines operations by automating this typically manual task and can assemble cases up to 550 mm wide by 650 mm long. The robotic slip-sheet inserter provides automatic, precise and consistent slip-sheet placement between layers of blanks – improving stacking stability during shipping. It can be configured for single or multiple rows and integrates seamlessly with the Sig-Pack’s computerized makeready function. These technologies are best implemented as part of a new Sig-Pack installation to ensure optimal performance and seamless operation.
