New Regulations from Brussels Hit Industry
European Commission regulations, which became applicable Dec. 13, aim to help consumers understand more about the food they eat by adding information about ingredient lists, nutrition information, food sources and font size. Many printers and packers will have to upgrade their standard business procedures to comply with the directives.
Run lengths for printers are likely to become a fraction of what they were while costs for traditional flexo or litho printing will increase sharply. John Corrall, managing director at Cambridgeshire, UK-based Industrial Inkjet Ltd, which develops customized inkjet systems, says that while the regulations apply to the food producer, the impact will be greater on packaging suppliers.
