Konica Minolta and MGI – JETvarnish 3D Web 400

        March 18, 2025

Edited by Cori Watkins, editor, PostPress

Leveraging the worldwide success of the AccurioShine 3600 and the JETvarnish EVO sheet-fed embellishment units, Konica Minolta, with US headquarters in Ramsey, New Jersey, and MGI recently introduced the JETvarnish 3D Web 400 – the only stand-alone, single-pass, spot UV and digital hot foil web press in the market. With a print width up 420 mm and substrate compatibility up to 300 µm thick, rolls of toner, inkjet or flexographic prints can be embellished at speeds up to 42 m/min. The JETvarnish 3D Web 400 is 100% web-fed and seamlessly integrates spot UV varnish, hot foil stamping and variable data printing in a single pass.

        Features

This modular system can be configured with an inline flexo station and semi-rotary diecutting and, like all Konica Minolta / MGI embellishment systems, is not bound to one upstream print technology. It enables converters and printers to reduce their customers’ time-to-market, while transforming the impact of their labels and packaging on the shelf, in full compliance with their environmental strategies.

The JETvarnish 3D Web 400 consists of a new digital hot foil stamping unit and heated roller. It is more compact and faster, which allows for improved productivity, and is compatible with one-inch or three-inch cores. This system contains exclusive inkjet technology with a piloting station, uses Konica Minolta’s genuine piezoelectric printheads and includes three drying technologies.

The inline hot foil system option can be installed at the time of purchase or in a future upgrade. The scalability of foil customization and personalization enables printers and trade finishers to expand into profitable new market segments. The JETvarnish 3D Web 400 and iFOIL W400 combination creates both visual and tactile excitement that print buyers, end users and brand owners are looking for to distinguish their products in the marketplace.

The AIS registration system eliminates more than 80% of the set-up time spent on the registration adjustment process. The system automatically calculates the need for adjustment and applies it without operator intervention and no drop in speed.

Completely upgradeable, with multiple added options, the JETvarnish 3D Web 400 is made up of modules that enable printers and converters to easily upgrade it as their finishing business grows. Available in four configurations – with one or two inkjet engines and with or without the hot foil unit – the system caters to diverse needs and budgets.

        Promising Solutions

The JETvarnish 3D Web 400 technology is user-friendly, environmentally conscious and easily scalable. Tailored for the evolving needs of the self-adhesive label and flexible packaging sectors, the JETvarnish 3D Web 400 meets the most varied requirements for short, medium and long runs, by enhancing basic four-color production with digital spot UV varnish and hot foil stamping in fixed or variable data, flat or embossed, facilitating multi-runs and versioning.

        Sustainability

The JETvarnish 3D Web 400’s 100% digital process eliminates the need for conventional intermediate consumables (clichés, plates and screens). Its small footprint and low power consumption immediately reduce CO2 emissions and its automatic on-the-fly makeready eliminates waste, optimizing raw material consumption. In parallel, JETvarnish 3D Web 400 UV varnishes and foils also meet the Ingede 11 de-inkability standard for certain substrates, allowing printed paper to be recycled. Additionally, it provides enhanced UV protection with lower energy consumption than traditional UV systems.

        US Election Impacts 2025 Outlook

        November 19, 2024

Edited by Cori Watkins, contributing editor, PostPress

In addition to feedback provided by industry professionals, another dynamic that will play a role in shaping the print finishing and embellishment industry in 2025 is the election results. The outcome of the 2024 US elections could have significant implications for the industry, depending on the policies and regulatory changes implemented by the new administration. Potential areas where the election results might influence the industry:

        • Environmental Regulations and Sustainability: Changes in federal or state policies around environmental sustainability, such as stricter regulations on waste management, carbon emissions or the use of certain chemicals in print finishing processes, could have a significant impact on the materials and technologies used in the industry. Subsidies and incentives for companies that invest in green technologies or eco-friendly practices, could encourage more investment in these areas.
        • Economic Policies: Tariffs and Trade policies that impact the import/export of raw materials could influence costs. Changes in corporate taxes as incentives for investment in automation and new technologies could encourage greater capital investment.
        • Labor Market Policies: If the new administration prioritizes workforce development programs or apprenticeships, this could help address labor shortages and skill gaps. Changes in minimum wage laws or union policies could impact labor costs and overall operations, particularly in the more labor-intensive aspects of print finishing.
        • Infrastructure and Technological Investment: Increased investment in infrastructure and logistics (such as transportation and distribution networks) could improve supply chain reliability, helping print finishing businesses better manage materials and delivery times. If there is increased government support for technology and innovation, this could help small and mid-sized businesses adopt advanced finishing and embellishment technologies, like digital presses or automation systems.

Michael J. Devereux II, CPA, CMP, Wipfli, an advisory firm offering tax compliance, audit and accounting, digital services, outsourcing, risk advisory and consulting services (an FSEA partner), provided his thoughts on the impact the election could have on the industry. Devereux explained, “It appears the Republican party will sweep the United States House of Representatives, Senate and Presidency, making it likely for manufacturers across the country to see significant changes in taxes, trade and tariffs. Under the new Republican leadership, there is a strong likelihood for further tax reduction and incentives aimed at bolstering the US manufacturing sector.”

“Based upon commentary of President-Elect Trump and leaders in Congress, three topics are the likely focus of tax legislation impacting the manufacturing sector,” he continued. “First are lower corporate tax rates. Trump has suggested lowering, even further, the C Corporation tax rate. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) reduced the top corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, and Trump would like to reduce it further, rewarding companies that manufacture in the US with a 15% corporate tax rate. Second is the extension of 100% bonus depreciation. Congress is likely to extend this popular provision among manufacturers. Third, a GOP-led Congress is likely to roll back the requirement to capitalize and amortize research and development (R&D) costs, a provision that became effective in tax year 2022.”

The forecast for the print finishing and embellishment industry in 2025 looks favorable with expected steady growth driven by technological advancements, demand for high-quality packaging and increasing consumer interest in personalization and sustainability. Political shifts could influence the industry in a variety of ways, depending on policies related to sustainability, labor, trade and technological development. While challenges like cost pressures, supply chain disruptions, skill gaps and labor shortages may persist, the industry’s ability to adapt to new technologies and consumer demands will position it for continued success in the years to come.

Marbach Introduces New Embossing Transfer System

        November 15, 2024

Press release submitted on behalf of Marbach

The globally operating diemaker Marbach, launched its new transfer system for embossing dies at drupa in June of this year. With this system, packaging manufacturers will be able to significantly reduce the set-up times for placing their embossing plates on the cutting plate.
Marbach Industry Manager Bernhard Reisser explains: “The positioning of male embossing dies on the cutting plate is often a time-consuming process for our customers, for which there is currently no standardized method. Every packaging manufacturer does it its own way. To make this process more time-saving and thus more efficient for our customers in the future, we have developed a ready-to-use solution that standardizes the placement process of the male embossing dies. But that’s not all: compared to many conventional methods, our embossing transfer system not only protects the cutting rules, but also the male embossing dies. This increases the service life of the tool.”

In addition to the advantages already mentioned, the Marbach embossing transfer system, also ensures that the female and male embossing dies are perfectly in register, thus guaranteeing flawless embossing results.

Combined with the new paper-based embossing pads developed by Marbach, customers have a smart and efficient solution for the entire embossing transfer process.

New Color-Logic Tools Show Printers How to Market Embellishments

        October 28, 2024

Press release submitted on behalf of Color-Logic

Color-Logic, West Chester, Ohio, the global leader in software for print embellishments, now provides licensed Color-Logic printers and their marketing/sales teams with a comprehensive suite of tools for explaining and promoting print embellishments to brands, corporate clients, agencies and design firms. These tools may be found at www.color-logic.com/marketing and may be accessed, not only by Color-Logic licensees, but by printers currently underutilizing their digital presses with fifth and sixth colors.

Discussing the new approach to attracting embellishment business, Color-Logic Director of Sales and Marketing Mark Geeves said: “After 15 years collaborating with brands, agencies, and design firms in the packaging industry, Color-Logic understands the common questions marketers have, and the substantial benefits that print embellishments bring to marketers using them effectively. Regrettably, many licensed Color-Logic printers and technology partners’ sales professionals have been surprised to learn that most graphic designers entering the field in recent years have not received adequate training in designing for print, particularly print with embellishments. To address this need, Color-Logic has created a marketing landing page featuring valuable resources such as sales and marketing videos, industry statistics and insights, and system components. Also included is an overview of the Color-Logic Design Suite and Touch7 Neon Color System, both with embellishment features and benefits tailored specifically for brands, agencies, and design firms.”

Geeves adds: “When creatives discover the possibilities of digital and conventional print embellishments, and how easily they can be utilized, they can create exceptional designs using Color-Logic tools.” For more information, visit www.color-logic.com.
