BOBST Celebrates Employee Innovation with the 2024 Inventor Award

        July 15, 2024

Press release submitted on behalf of BOBST.

BOBST, Mex, Switzerland, suppliers of substrate processing, printing and converting equipment and services for the label, flexible packaging, folding carton and corrugated board industries, is proud to announce the recipient of its Inventor Award 2024. Tim Lair, Additive Manufacturing Engineer at Bobst Mex in Switzerland, has been honored for his remarkable work in optimizing the workflow of platen systems, such as die-cutters and hot stamping units, using 3D printed parts.

Chosen from among the multitude of inventions created by BOBST employees that were awarded a patent for the first time in 2023, Lair’s invention excelled in all four criteria: current and future commercial value, technical value for the customer, and product marketability. As such, it represents a breakthrough solution that contributes to elevating productivity, efficiency and quality in packaging production, while minimizing the environmental impact.

“The annual Inventor Award is an incredibly important initiative within the BOBST organization. It recognizes the high skills level, dedication and innovative mindset of our employees across the globe, which is the foundation for the continued success of BOBST and its customers,” said Leonard Badet, Chief Technology Officer at BOBST.

The winning invention, Sealing of Bernoulli module, introduces a basic system that makes it easy to install a simple braking mechanism, called a Bernoulli brake, at the entrance of a platen. It achieves this by using multiple modules that are made using 3D printing technology. With this innovative system, assembling such modules becomes much easier. In addition, it has the potential to reduce the cost of machine manufacturing and the volume of air needed in operation.

Mr Badet commented, “With this invention, Tim is leveraging his expertise in additive manufacturing to drive development in the design of parts and assemblies, keeping BOBST at the bleeding edge of innovation. He also plays an instrumental part in training the next generation by transmitting his specialized knowledge in this field to our apprentices and trainees.”

Developed to increase the awareness of BOBST’s strong intellectual property portfolio, the annual Inventor Award scheme is sponsored by CEO Jean-Pascal Bobst.

BOBST remains committed to fostering innovation that drives progress in the packaging industry, benefiting both our clients and the environment. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of Lair’s invention on the industry and continuing to support groundbreaking advancements in packaging technology.

It impressively demonstrated the progress of an entire sector and demonstrated the operational excellence of the industry. A total of 1,643 exhibitors from 52 nations presented an outstanding showcase of innovations in the Düsseldorf exhibition halls and inspired the trade visitors with unforgettable performances. The international share of the visitors was 80%, with attendees coming from 174 countries – a record figure. After Europe, Asia was the most strongly represented region with 22%, followed by America with 12%. Asia as well as Latin America and the MENA region are markets with great growth potential, which was reflected in the significant increase in exhibitor participation and order books. Many key players, such as Bobst, Canon, Fujifilm, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, HP, Horizon, Koenig & Bauer, Komori Konica Minolta, Kurz and Landa, reported having signed contracts that significantly exceeded expectations. In some cases, the sales targets set were already achieved in the first few days of the trade fair.

Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, is highly satisfied with the course of the trade fair: “drupa has underpinned its position as the industry’s leading trade fair and its unique appeal in a remarkable way. The impressive international flair and, above all, the high decision-making competence of the visitors ensured in-depth and well-founded technical discussions at the trade fair stands on the one hand and many direct investment decisions on the other. Our exhibitors told us about large-volume purchase agreements.”

Dr Andreas Pleßke, Chairman of the drupa Committee, emphasized the exceptional position and relevance of drupa: “drupa stands for new approaches and new technologies like no other trade fair. It is not only the largest, but also the most important global platform for our industry, because the entire printing and post-press industry meets at this the world-leading trade fair. It has been invaluable for generating leads. Nowhere else offers the opportunity to make so many new international contacts from all over the world in such a short space of time in one place.”

        Industry decision-makers highly satisfied
Exhibitors praised the high level of decision-making authority of the visitors. They, in turn, gave top marks to the range of products and services on offer in the 18 exhibition halls. Around 96% of all visitors confirmed that they had fully achieved the objectives associated with their visit. Many well-known brand owners were welcomed at the trade fair stands. Overall, 170,000 trade visitors attended drupa 2024.

        Digitalization as a determining factor
Automation took center stage at this year’s drupa, with a strong focus on AI and smart workflows, including software solutions. It became evident that digital and analogue technologies ideally complement and benefit from each other. Traditional industry leaders presented a wide range of digital solutions, while digital pioneers integrated conventional components into their offerings. Robotics played an important role in the exhibition halls and illustrated the path towards the smart factory.

        Transformation and growth
drupa made it very clear that the industry has great potential for the future, even against the backdrop of many challenges and that the prospects are promising. In the last financial year, the global printing industry achieved a turnover of around EUR 840 billion (source: Smithers) and continues to develop at varying pace worldwide.

“At drupa 2024, we experienced firsthand just how relevant and resilient this industry is,” summarizes Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa, Portfolio Print Technologies. “The community is determined to set the course for the future together. Exchanging ideas with people from all continents and from all areas of the industry was extremely enriching and inspiring. We were able to welcome around 50 large delegations from various nations, and numerous globally active associations and organizations chose drupa as the ideal setting for their conferences and board meetings.”

Together we are stronger. Many new strategic alliances concluded at the trade fair reflected the opportunities that are only possible in such a concentrated form at drupa: meeting market players from other countries around the world in person, using core competences as synergy effects, forming networks and driving the market forward together

        Sustainable technologies in focus
Technology is the key to achieving sustainability goals – exhibitors at drupa illustrated this with numerous practice-orientated developments and concrete solutions. Top priority is given to resource efficiency and the path to a functioning circular economy. In addition, Touchpoint Sustainability from the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (VDMA) showcased current state of the art innovations, presented best-practice use cases and gave a far-reaching outlook into the future of a sustainable printing industry.

LEONHARD KURZ Presents Its Sustainability Report 2023

        July 1, 2024

Press release submitted on behalf of LEONHARD KURZ.

With its Sustainability Report 2023, LEONHARD KURZ, Fürth, Germany, once again shows how important responsible corporate governance is to the Group. In the more than 100-page report, the world’s leading specialist in thin-film and finishing technology outlines its key areas of focus in domains such as the value chain, environmental protection, and labor and human rights.

Sustainability plays a key role for KURZ. The company has been a member of the UN Global Compact Network since 2021, an initiative by the United Nations that aims to promote an inclusive and sustainable economy across industries and borders. KURZ is also involved in numerous other sustainability initiatives.

KURZ’s ambition: ‘Be a green leader’
In its Sustainability Report 2023, the Group describes and documents its comprehensive commitment to sustainability. All the company’s activities that contribute to its sustainability strategy are grouped under the tagline ‘Be a green leader.’ This message highlights, on the one hand, the importance of responsible business practices for people and the environment, and on the other hand, it extends an offer to all of the company’s customers. CEODr. Andreas Hirschfelder emphasizes that the company remains firmly focused on the goals it has set itself and will continue to pursue them consistently. “We’re serious about becoming the most sustainable company in our industry. “Product innovations and our constant development toward a circular economy not only benefit us but also sustainably lead our customers to success.”

The thin-film specialist is already on the right track. Its Sustainability Report 2023, for example, outlines key requirements and environmental directives, including those related to raw material selection and handling. Environmental management systems ensure compliance with standards and guarantee continuous improvement. Efficient use of all raw materials used is already being ensured.

In order for KURZ to achieve its ambitious sustainability goals in the long term together with its partners and customers, short-term intermediate goals were also formulated in this year’s report, which are intended to lead to a reduction in energy consumption and thus to an improvement in the CO 2 balance. Among other things, in addition to the optimization of the already existing photovoltaic system, the construction of the company’s own solar carport on the company premises in Fürth is to be completed by the end of 2024.

        Values of the family business
At KURZ, the values of a family-owned business – such as employee protection, work-life balance, and personal and professional development – are central to our actions. Here, too, the company consistently pursues its set goals. KURZ provides its employees with support in the areas of eldercare and childcare, and promotes professional and part-time training, as well as corporate health management. KURZ was also able to increase the range of individual training courses for employees last year. The number of participants increased by more than 50% compared to the previous year.

        The goal: A closed loop
With the KURZ take-back and recycling program RECOSYS ® 2.0, the company opens up completely new possibilities in terms of sustainability. PET production residues from the graphics industry can be processed into recycled PET (rPET for short) for the first time. This, in turn, can be reused as a RECOSYS ® rPET raw material for the manufacture of plastic bottles or packaging. With the help of RECOSYS ® 2.0, Scope 3 emissions, i.e. greenhouse gas emissions related to the disposal of transfer products, can be reduced by up to 90%. We want to keep production backlogs as low as possible in order to conserve resources. In this way, the company is taking a big step closer to its vision of a closed loop.

The complete KURZ Sustainability Report 2023 can be viewed at: www.kurz-world.com/en/sustainability/.

Roland DGA Announces North American Availability of New VersaOBJECT CO-i Series UV Flatbed Printers

        June 28, 2024

Press release submitted on behalf of Roland DGA.

Roland DGA, Irvine, California, has announced the North American availability of its new VersaOBJECT™ CO-i Series printers – two innovative and highly versatile UV-LED flatbed inkjet printers capable of printing directly onto substrates and objects up to 9.5 inches in height and weighing up to 640 pounds. The CO-i Series flatbeds replace the previously offered CO Series devices within the Roland DG product line, offering users even greater versatility, convenience, and ease of use.

Customers can choose from two available CO-i Series models – the 30-inch CO-300i-F2 and the 64-inch CO-640i-F3 – to meet their specific needs. Both models enable users to direct-print vibrant, detailed graphics and text onto a wide range of materials and three-dimensional items, including those with curved or uneven surfaces, with ease and precision.

CO-i Series flatbeds are also equipped with innovative features that help ensure high-quality output and simple, safe operation. Each model features a touch panel that is integrated into the printer’s ergonomically designed table, eliminating the need for a separate control tower and allowing for efficient production in print environments with limited workspace. Users will also appreciate the CO-i printer’s anti-static bar as well as its automated printhead cleaning function – improvements that streamline workflow while minimizing maintenance requirements.

The CO-i Series flatbeds direct-print colorful, eye-catching graphics onto virtually any type of material, including plastic, wood, canvas, vinyl, paper, and more. An onboard Primer ink optimizes adhesion on materials that were previously difficult to print on, such as glass and metal, making it easy to personalize consumer products or customize industrial products and parts, interior decor, signs and graphics, POP displays, packaging, and other short-run production items.

Precision ink firing ensures stunning image quality and high color saturation, while powerful LED lamps cure the UV ink instantly, enabling users to accurately reproduce the finest details – from small text to elaborately textured patterns and gradations.

The CO-i Series supports CMYKOrRe as well as Gloss, White, and Primer specialty inks. The Gloss ink allows users to incorporate stunning finishing effects, including unique textures and simulated embossing, into their prints. High-opacity White ink is often used as a base coat when printing on transparent film or dark objects, while Orange and Red widen the color gamut for precise brand color reproduction and rich, vivid color expression.

All VersaOBJECT CO-i printers come with VersaWorks® 6 software, Roland DG’s powerful and intuitive RIP, which processes PDF, EPS, PS files at high speeds and auto-generates White, Gloss and Primer layers. The CO-i Series also supports cloud-based services, including Roland DG Connect, for more efficient business operations and growth, including better technical support, operational visibility, easy profit calculations, and more. It also features PrintAutoMate for businesses like e-commerce sites that manage a wide variety of data, media, and products, and require continuous output in large batches.

“Our new CO-i Series UV flatbeds provide a versatile solution to meet the increasing demand for individualized, rapid, on-demand printing,” said Roland DGA’s UV Printer Product Manager, Jay Roberts. “They offer shorter production times, reduced costs, and lower environmental impact while expanding product decoration possibilities, enabling users to maximize their creative options and grow their businesses.”

Those attending PRINTING United can get a firsthand look at the CO-i Series printers in action. Roland DGA will be demonstrating the impressive capabilities of these advanced UV flatbeds in its booth (# SL10088), along with other new and popular Roland DG products.
