C&W Boosts In-House Services with Graphco’s Foliant System

        June 23, 2025

Press release submitted on behalf of Graphco

Graphco, Solon, Ohio, a premier supplier of print finishing solutions and the exclusive North American distributor of Foliant Laminating Systems, proudly announces the successful implementation of the Foliant Taurus 530 NG at C&W Graphic Finishing in Indianapolis, Indiana. Since its installation in October 2024, the system has already unlocked significant operational value and new growth avenues for C&W.

With over 60 years of proven excellence, C&W Graphic Finishing has earned industry-wide recognition for its precision die-cutting services. Over time, the company has evolved into a comprehensive post-press solutions provider, now offering more than 25 finishing capabilities—including converting, perfect binding, and kitting. In addition to the Foliant Taurus, Graphco also supported C&W in acquiring a Horizon collating system in 2022 and a BQ-270V with HT-30C in 2021.

The move into lamination marks a strategic expansion of C&W’s service portfolio, directly aligned with customer demand. “We’ve added four new services in the last two years,” says Taylor Gates, Vice President at C&W. “Laminating is the latest. Before the Taurus, we didn’t laminate, but it’s something our customers kept asking for. Local options are limited, so clients had to send jobs elsewhere, adding extra freight and time just to get them laminated—then send them back to us to finish. We saw an opportunity to fill that need.”

C&W chose the Foliant Taurus 530 NG for its robust performance, production flexibility, and intuitive operation. The machine accommodates a wide array of film types—including gloss, matte, soft-touch, and specialty finishes—perfect for applications like bookmarks, coil-bound books, pocket folders, and beyond. “The most popular finish for us is gloss, followed by soft touch,” notes Gates. The Taurus delivers pristine, bubble-free lamination and crisp edges, elevating both durability and visual appeal.

Built for high-throughput environments, the Taurus 530 NG features advanced automation such as an integrated feeder and compatibility with both digital and offset outputs. The rollout at C&W was seamless. “The install was very smooth,” recalls Ryan Nutter, C&W’s Production Manager. “I expected a full-day process like we’ve had with other equipment, but this was a breeze.”

The Foliant system is already fueling measurable business gains. “The Taurus has been worth the investment,” says Nutter. “Before, when our customers sent their jobs somewhere else for lamination, they were going to companies that offered the same services we do. We had no way of knowing how many jobs we were losing. Now with our laminator, we can handle the whole process, keeping it all under one roof.” Beyond enhancing service to existing clients, the new offering is attracting fresh accounts. “It’s opening up the doors and bringing in new customers. The more we can do in-house, the better,” Nutter adds.

Chris Manley, President of Graphco, commended the initiative: “We’re always proud to support forward-thinking companies like C&W Graphic Finishing that invest in their growth and adaptability. We’re thrilled to see the early success they’re having with the Foliant system, and we’re excited to see where it takes them next.”

Baumer HHS Introduces DF Hot Melt Hoses with Metal Core

        June 20, 2025

Press release submitted on Baumer HHS

Baumer hhs, Krefeld, Germany, has expanded its Xmelt product range for hot melt applications to include heated hoses with a metal core. Their service life is three times that of conventional plastic hoses. In fact, the new DF hoses offer several advantages for hot melt applications.

DF stands for “degradation-free” to emphasize that the new heated hoses eliminate the adhesive degradation caused by charring. “The metal core significantly increases the reliability of production processes for hot melt applications, because it prevents oxygen from diffusing into the hoses when they are heated for long periods, for instance, when machine operators forget to switch off the melters over the weekend. A series of trials showed that after 50 hours at 180 degrees Celsius, hot melt adhesive remains unchanged and clear inside our DF hoses. The quality of the adhesive did not deteriorate at all even after such a long period. In other words, the metal core totally prevents charring of the adhesive inside the hoses,” explains Thomas Walther, Head of Corporate Strategy & Innovation at Baumer hhs.

As a result, the new DF hot melt hoses also eliminate the machine failures that occur when filters and nozzles get clogged with charred glue. In short, production lines with hot melt systems that have been switched over to these hoses boast higher availability. And the list of advantages goes on: The new DF hot melt hoses require less maintenance. Their metal core reduces energy consumption by some 20%, enhancing the sustainability of hot melt applications.

The DF hoses with metal core were developed for Baumer hhs’s Xmelt product range, which is used in countless industrial applications worldwide to process and apply hot melt adhesives. Products range from energy-efficient hot melt units, heated hoses and application heads, to a central adhesive supply system that can supply glue to several packaging machines. Xmelt provides solutions – from a single supplier – for virtually all demands imposed on industrial hot melt applications.

Compatible with other hot melt systems
Baumer hhs further offers versions of the new DF hot melt hoses that are compatible with various common hot melt systems from other suppliers. “The hoses currently used in these systems can be replaced with our new DF heated hoses, like a plug-and-play device,” says Walther.

Packaging manufacturers are switching to hoses with a metal core especially for hot melt applications that place high demands on quality gluing. The same goes for manufacturers of machines that apply hot melt adhesives. They are now installing exclusively these premium hoses in their systems. Thanks to market introduction of the new DF hot melt hoses from Baumer hhs, these manufacturers can now also benefit from the quality and reliability for which the German company and its equipment are so well known around the globe.

As part of a special promotion to mark product launch, Baumer hhs is offering its premium new hoses at a special, low, introductory price, valid through September 2025. They cost no more than conventional heated hoses made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fluoropolymer. “With this special promotion, we want to give packaging manufacturers an attractive opportunity to find out more about the new hoses and try them out in day-to-day production. Our sales and service experts are available at all times to assist both existing and new customers.”

        June 18, 2025

Press release submitted on behalf of IST METZ

Organizer and UV specialist IST METZ can look back on an all-round successful event for UV Days 2025 which took place in Nürtingen, Germany. With around 1000 visitors from 30 countries and 44 exhibitors, the industry event offered an international platform for innovation, exchange and networking. The combination of technological highlights, practical live demos and inspiring presentations once again made UV Days 2025 a central meeting point for the industry.

With the UV Days 2025,, IST METZ once again underlined its leading role in UV and LED technology. Challenging the ‘Paperless Ideal’: The Sustainable Reality of Direct Mail

        June 16, 2025

By Jules VanSant, executive director, Two Sides North America

Many business owners striving to adopt eco-friendly practices have begun to view direct mail and other responsible paper use with skepticism based on false information and “greenwashing.” However, the paper and mailing industries have long been proactive in implementing sustainable practices that not only mitigate environmental concerns but also positively contribute to the planet’s health.

        Paper Industry’s Commitment to Sustainability

The paper industry has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. In the US, over one billion trees annually are planted, with the industry playing a significant role in these reforestation efforts. This dedication ensures that forested areas remain stable, supporting biodiversity and contributing to carbon sequestration.

Forests are pivotal in absorbing carbon dioxide (CO₂), acting as significant carbon sinks. Recent studies indicate that global forests absorb approximately twice as much CO₂ as they annually emit, sequestering around 7.6 billion metric tons of CO₂ each year. In the US, private forests are particularly effective, sequestering over one metric ton of carbon per acre annually.

Moreover, paper is one of the most recycled materials globally. The paper recycling rate in the US steadily hovers around 65-69%, reflecting the industry’s dedication to resource conservation, and cardboard box recycling sits well above that at 71-76%.

The circular economy is an important concept in sustainability – and paper production is a key example of this in action. Once the paper has been used – for example, as packaging, books, direct mail or office supplies – it can be collected, recycled and transformed into new paper products. The recycling process involves breaking down the paper back into pulp, removing ink and contaminants and reforming it into new paper.

Innovations in Direct Mail for Environmental Benefit

Companies continually are seeking ways to minimize the environmental impact of direct mail. Innovations such as two-way reusable envelopes have been introduced, allowing recipients to return mail using the same envelope, thereby reducing paper consumption and waste.

Additionally, using eco-friendly inks, recycled paper, improved data targeting and sustainable materials in direct mail campaigns has become increasingly prevalent, aligning marketing efforts with environmental values and appealing to eco-conscious consumers. The use of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)-certified or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI®) products ensures that materials come from responsibly managed forests, further supporting environmental sustainability. Additionally, innovative designs, such as reusable envelopes and printing on both sides of the paper, reduce material usage. Encouraging recipients to recycle mail pieces by including recycling instructions also promotes environmental responsibility among consumers.

        Direct Mail Just Works

In addition to its inherently green features, direct mail continues to be an effective marketing tool, standing out in a sea of communications. In a recent white paper presented by the Winterberry Group and the USPS, one marketing VP put it this way, “As digital channels become oversaturated, digitally native brands are turning to direct mail as a way to cut through the noise.”

Despite rising postage, marketers surveyed were not planning to cut back on direct marketing in 2025. In fact, only 3% were planning to decrease the company’s direct mail budget. Instead,

        • 50% said they planned to invest in improved data and technology to support more effective targeting and personalization
        • 32% planned to seek to better leverage discounts or cost efficiencies from its suppliers/partners
        • 8% planned to reduce its direct mail volume
        • 6% planned to shift to lower-cost formats or shared/cooperative mail opportunities

Precise data mining capabilities, easy audience segmentation, inexpensive variable data printing and seamless connectivity to digital assets with QR codes and technology increasingly entice marketers to direct mail. By leveraging postal data, said the VP, “these brands can achieve a level of precise audience segmentation and targeting that digital platforms often struggle to match.”

The Misconception of ‘Paperless’ as the Only Green Option

While digital communication often is perceived as the more environmentally friendly option, it’s essential to recognize that electronic media also have environmental footprints, including staggering energy consumption and electronic waste. The rise of massive server farms to support digital communication and data storage promises efficiency and convenience. However, the environmental costs of this shift are significant. And with 62 billion kg of electronic waste generated worldwide in 2022, only 22.3% of this officially was documented as properly collected and recycled.

The paper industry’s sustainable practices, combined with responsible direct mail strategies, offer a balanced approach to communication that supports environmental health.

        Ending Greenwashing for Good

Greenwashing is disinformation disseminated by an organization to present an environmentally responsible public image. Consumers rely on messages from corporations, government agencies and other organizations to inform their communication choices. Yet it is not uncommon for these organizations to make unsubstantiated and misleading environmental claims that promote switching from paper to electronic communication as better for the environment, e.g., “go paperless – go green’ and ‘go paperless, save trees.”

Economic pressures continue to drive many cases of greenwashing, with numerous organizations that previously have relied on paper for communication shifting their customers from traditional paper-based services to digital platforms to cut costs. Globally, Two Sides has engaged over 2,800 organizations making misleading claims about paper. In North America alone, nearly 200 companies, from large Fortune 500 companies to small local utilities, have removed or changed these statements.

        Paper Makes the Difference

The direct mail and paper industries have made significant strides in adopting sustainable practices that benefit the environment. Through well-managed forests, effective carbon sequestration and innovative mailing solutions, these industries continue to demonstrate that direct mail can be a green and responsible choice for businesses committed to environmental stewardship.

By embracing these advancements, businesses confidently can incorporate direct mail and other paper use into their marketing strategies, knowing that it aligns with green initiatives and resonates with environmentally conscious consumers.
