        Compact Foilers Ltd, the Taunton, England, manufacturer of Print Enhancement modules for offset, digital and flexo printing presses, have appointed Carton Craft Supply, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia, as its USA distributer.

        Carton Craft represents other European suppliers, and three technicians are on staff to provide spare parts and support locally to the increasing Compact Foiler customer base. The product fits Carton Craft Supply’s current portfolio and skill set. Carton Craft personnel have completed training and will be supported throughout by James Self, Compact Foilers’ sales manager, and Bill Strake, area sales manager.

        Sun Chemical Opens New Coatings Lab

        Sun Chemical, Parsippany, New Jersey, opened a new coatings lab in its Carlstadt, New Jersey, research and development facility. The 11,000 sq. ft. investment features state-of-the-art equipment and unsurpassed analytical support for studying migration, adhesion, permeability and other performance-related coating phenomena.

        A variety of equipment has been added to the new lab, including: gas transmission rate analyzers, glass bottle testing instrumentation and coatings spraying equipment to develop new and improved water, solvent and energy-curable primers, inks and coatings. A lab laminator will be added in 2017 to help study the interaction between ink, substrate, primers, overprint varnishes and laminating adhesives. The lab is the fourth of its kind worldwide, joining similar laboratories located in the United Kingdom and DIC R&D centers in Japan.

        New textured finishes from Breit Technologies, Overland Park, Kansas, provide a unique look and feel to brand packaging using the company’s innovative Cast & Cure™ (C2) technology and proprietary casting films.

        The finishes presently include linen and brushstroke patterns and can be applied as high-resolution spot, as well as flood, finishes. A wide variety of Cast & Cure decorative finishes can be applied to film, paper and other substrates using the company’s unique patterned films.

        Film patterns are impressed onto varnished surfaces and cured with LED, UV or EB sources. The films can be reused multiple times, providing excellent cost economies on volume runs. Over 30 film patterns are presently available for matte, ultra-high gloss, textured and holographic finishes. C2 can be applied using existing cold foil stations or with Breit Technologies’ custom machine lines available for narrow web, wide-web and sheet-fed applications.

        Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), Heidelberg, Germany, and Steinemann Technology AG based in St. Gallen, Switzerland, have signed a marketing cooperation agreement.

        Under the agreement, Heidelberg is to take over lead management of Steinemann’s entire portfolio of print finishing systems in several markets, including Germany, France, India, Japan and the US. Steinemann’s modular range of print finishing systems currently encompasses the dmax 76 and dmax 106—two professional digital machines for spot and relief varnishing on sheet sizes up to B1. The systems also include the colibri 76 and colibri 108, two conventional, high-speed machines for the full-flood varnishing of sheet sizes up to 108x145cm.

        The Duplo 600i Booklet System

        Duplo USA Corporation, Santa Ana, California, has released the 600i Booklet System, Duplo’s high-end collating and bookletmaking solution.

        Integrating the fully automatic DBM-600 Bookletmaker with the high-speed DSC-10/60i Suction Collators, the 600i Booklet System produces professional saddle-, side- or corner-stitched booklets, as well as letter landscape applications. The 600i Booklet System can produce up to 5,200 booklets per hour or collate up to 10,000 sets per hour into a stacker.

        It features the PC Controller software, which enables users to operate the entire system from a PC, as well as create and save virtually an unlimited number of jobs onto the hard drive for faster changeovers. By using the standard Intelligent Multi-Bin Feeding (IMBF) feature in the PC Controller software, custom feed applications can be performed, and a variety of unique job requirements can be fulfilled.

        Heidelberg Partners with Masterwork in the UK

        Heidelberg UK and Masterwork Graphic Equipment (UK) have agreed to a partnership that will provide customers with the very best access to expertise and a wide portfolio of postpress products.

        Gerard Heanue from Heidelberg and Ken Farnsworth from Masterwork have signed the sales accord, which enables Heidelberg to sell not only the Promatrix die-cutter and Diana X and Diana Smart folder gluers but also hybrid machines like the Duopress which will both hot foil and emboss work in one pass at 6,000 cartons an hour. The Duopress can also incorporate both stripping and blanking facilities in a single pass, effectively providing 12,000 impressions an hour, producing fully finished product that traditionally would require two machines. The agreement also includes offline inspection systems and other machines from the Masterwork product range.

        MGI Personalizes 20k GRAPH EXPO Directory Covers

        Cover Card design for GRAPH EXPO in JETvarnish 3D spot UV coater and iFOIL hot foil

        MGI Digital Technology, Melbourne, Florida, produced 20,000 tip-on cover cards for the GRAPH EXPO 15 Show Directory with its integrated JETvarnish 3D spot UV coater and iFOIL hot foiling solution. The project was done in conjunction with The Printing Impressions Group, which publishes the annual show directory for GRAPH EXPO, as well as MGI business partners Mohawk Fine Ppaers, KDX America and API Foils. The cards were cut by The Printer’s Edge.

        Four separate cover card designs were treated with decorative 3D textures and embossed foil highlights. Each card was printed with a personalized name on the MGI Meteor DP8700 XI+ with variable data and enhanced on the JETvarnish 3D and iFOIL with variable data finishing techniques. GRAPH EXPO will take place Sept. 13-16 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois.
