FSEA•IADD Joint Conference Coming to Nashville Area in April

The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) and the International Association of Diecutting and Diemaking (IADD) will hold the 2018 Joint Conference April 11 through 13 at the Franklin Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee, USA, near Nashville.

The conference offers a supplier trade fair, educational programming to address new technology and trends in the industry, and an awards reception where the recipients of the FSEA Gold Leaf Awards, FSEA Lifetime Achievement Award and IADD Presidential Award will be honored.

This year, conference attendees will have the opportunity to share best practices on a variety of subjects with industry peers as part of the networking workshops held during conference programming. For more information, go to www.fsea-iaddconf.com.

Nelson Stevens to Be Honored as FSEA Lifetime Achievement Awardee

On Thursday, April 12, Nelson Stevens will be recognized as the recipient of the 2018 FSEA Lifetime Achievement Award at the FSEA•IADD Joint Conference in Franklin, Tennessee. The award honors Stevens for his four decades of leadership in the industry, working with BOBST as a sales manager for 12 years before starting Independent Machinery, Inc., in the early 1980s.

Among other successes, in 1991, Stevens signed an agreement with Gietz to bring its line of foil stamping equipment to North America and was a significant contributor to the growth of foil stamping in the wine and spirits label market.

Those wishing to honor Nelson are encouraged to attend the conference and awards reception. Register at www.fsea-iaddconf.com.

FSEA Partners on New Alternatives for Foil Waste Disposal

The disposal of used hot stamping and cold foil has been a challenge for the foil industry for many years. FSEA has announced a new partnership with Channeled Resources Group (CRG) to help eliminate used or obsolete rolls of hot and cold foil from the waste stream.

CRG has qualified this by-product as feedstock for energy with two current partners. One partner, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, mixes these materials with other nonrecyclables and then shreds it to be extruded as fuel pellets. The pellets are burned in a commercial boiler and the energy sold to the grid. The other partner, located in Gary, Indiana, shreds materials to fluff, which then is used as an alternative to coal in a limestone kiln.

“Our research has found that any type of trucking/shipping costs involved with the foil waste will be similar to landfill costs, or even less, depending on the location,” explained Calvin Frost, CRG. “And, best of all, it will create a sustainable choice for FSEA members and others.”

“We are very excited to work with Calvin Frost and CRG on this project,” stated FSEA Executive Director Jeff Peterson. “We have been working to find alternatives to the landfill for foil waste for several years, and the partnership with CRG is a great start in this initiative.”

For more information on how to get started with FSEA and CRG, contact Jeff Peterson at jeff@fsea.com or 785.271.5816.

        March 13, 2018

        PostPress

The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) and the International Association of Diecutting and Diemaking (IADD) have announced the programming line-up for the 2018 Joint Conference, to be held April 11-13 at the Franklin Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee, USA, near Nashville.

The FSEA·IADD Joint Conference is the only event this year targeted to the print finishing, diecutting and diemaking industries. The conference offers a supplier trade fair, educational programming and an awards reception where the recipients of the FSEA Gold Leaf Awards, FSEA Lifetime Achievement Award and IADD Presidential Award will be honored. New this year, conference attendees will have the opportunity to share best practices on a variety of subjects with industry peers as part of the Networking Workshops held during conference programming.

Keynote speakers: Thursday morning’s keynote speaker is Ken Thoreson of Acumen Management Group. Thoreson is a respected sales and leadership advisor who will share his recipe for professional and personal development, leading to a culture of high performance in any organization. The midsized injection molding company from Pennsylvania has seen incredible increases in profit and employee engagement.

Breakout sessions: Keeping up on the latest industry trends can mean the difference between a successful year and one that is … not. Conference breakout sessions, led by field experts, include topics such as design and packaging trends, foil recyclability, developing tomorrow’s workforce, economic impact and the 4 Disciplines of Execution.

Networking workshops: New this year, peers from the industry will lead discussions on topics of high impact where attendees discuss common issues and share their companies’ solutions. Topics include managing converting industry workflow, addressing customer demands and decreasing spoilage.

Kick It Up in 2018: It Is Time To Get Involved!

        January 13, 2018

        By Jeff Peterson, editor-in-chief, PostPress

Editor’s Note: This article was published in the November/December 2017 issue of PostPress magazine.

The Foil & Specialty Effects Association theme for next year is Kick It Up in 2018. Our goal is to reach out to our FSEA members and potential members to emphasize the advantages of getting more involved with FSEA – and the industry as a whole. This can be accomplished in many ways, but you must take that first step.

There is no better way to take that first step than to make plans to join us for the upcoming FSEA-IADD Joint Conference in April next year. We are very excited to be partnering again with the International Association of Diecutting and Diemaking (IADD) for this special event, taking place April 11-13 in Franklin, Tennessee, at the Franklin Cool Springs Marriott Hotel. The conference will be full of great programming, including new, intimate workshops on subjects such as addressing current customer demands, decreasing spoilage in your plant, and finding and keeping millennial employees. The workshops will engage with small groups in separate breakout rooms to foster networking and discussion on these subjects, as well as many others.

The conference will open with a welcome reception and supplier trade fair, allowing attendees to network and visit with leading suppliers of foil, dies and equipment for the finishing and diecutting/diemaking industries. The second night will include a reception for the FSEA Gold Leaf Awards, followed by a night out on the town. Buses will transport attendees to downtown Nashville – adding a little music and fun to the event! For all the details on registration, hotel, speakers and sessions, visit www.fsea-iaddconf.com.

Another easy way to get involved in 2018 is to support and enter the 25th Annual FSEA Gold Leaf Awards with the cool work you have done in the past year. Winners gain recognition for their creative work through the FSEA website, PostPress magazine, the Gold Leaf Awards Reception and through other magazines, such as Folding Carton Industry and BPX (formerly Package Design) magazines. I still believe this is the single most important thing we do at FSEA. The publicity we receive for our Gold Leaf Awards just gets better and better each year. So, be sure you keep your best work from this past year and enter. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.fsea.com. Entries will be accepted through Feb. 15, 2018.

There also are smaller things you can do to be more involved with FSEA, such as taking advantage of our Grainger discount program. We now have FSEA members saving several thousand dollars every year on their Grainger purchases. It just makes sense to sign up. Also, be sure that you are part of our FSEA HelpLinks email community. All types of technical questions are asked on the HelpLinks, and fellow members respond with helpful answers.

Again, taking that first step is the key. We sure hope you will join us to “Kick it Up in 2018.” Hope to see you in Franklin in April!

Jeff Peterson is executive director of the Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) and editor-in-chief of PostPress. An industry veteran with deep roots in the foil and specialty effects industry, Peterson can be reached at jeff@fsea.com.

Second White Paper Available on Impact of Enhancements on Shelf Presence

The FSEA has officially released its second white paper on “The Impact of High-Visibility Enhancements on Shelf Presence.” This second white paper, based on a study conducted by the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics at Clemson University, examines an unknown brand of disposable single-serve coffee packaging that was created specifically for the study – Zapotec – and compares it to name brand packaging on a retail shelf. The Zapotec packaging was studied in three iterations, with both a control and an enhanced package: a printed Zapotec package and stamped red emblem; a printed package with a red metallic foil emblem; and the same printed package with a gold metallic foil emblem.

Using eye-tracking devices that track actual pupil movement, the study analyzed how long it took the 180 participants to find a package on a shelf and how long the participants fixated on an item. As one example of study results, the printed “red bird control” Zapotec carton was placed on the shelf next to well-known brands, such as Maxwell House, Gevalia, Donut Shop, Green Mountain and Eight O’Clock. The unenhanced carton was second to last in “Time to First Fixation” – or time until the participants’ attentions were focused on the cartons. However, when the enhanced Zapotec carton with a red foil stamped emblem was placed alongside the same known brands, the Zapotec carton rated second overall in Time to First Fixation. This is a significant difference, as the unknown brand rated higher than Maxwell House, Eight O’Clock, and Donut Shop in attracting consumer attention quickly.

The white paper also includes purchasing data from the study. These results also were positive, showing the gold foil stamped cartons attracted consumer attention that led shoppers to purchase the unknown coffee brand just as often as name brands Maxwell House and Green Mountain Coffee and more frequently than Eight O’Clock.

To receive a copy of the 10-page white paper, contact Jeff Peterson at jeff@fsea.com. The full white paper is free to current FSEA members. Additional studies and white papers will be out soon from FSEA. The support of the FSEA membership makes this all possible.

Attendees had the opportunity to see the entire Seidl’s Bindery operation, which included over 50 pieces of bindery and finishing equipment in its 100,000 square foot facility. “Seidl’s Bindery is one of the largest bindery/finishing operations in the country,” added Jeff Peterson, FSEA executive director. “It was a true treat to see the efficiency and magnitude of the operation.”

Peterson attended the event and spent time discussing some of the new projects the FSEA is involved in, including its new IMPACT Marketing Kit and the newest white paper on the impact of specialty effects on shelf presence. Future meetings are planned for the FSEA Young Alliance, including a meeting to be scheduled during the upcoming IADD•FSEA Odyssey next spring in Schaumburg, Illinois.

The FSEA Young Alliance is a group of industry peers – younger than 45 – looking to gain knowledge of their businesses, move forward with new technology in high-end finishing and explore opportunities in an ever-changing graphic arts environment. If you are interested in becoming involved with the FSEA Young Alliance, please contact Matt Seidl at matt@seidlsbindery.com or Jeff Peterson at jeff@fsea.com.
